Our Initiatives

  • Wednesday Meetings

LATIN-19 gathers virtually every Wednesday at noon in an open forum to discuss topics relevant to the health and well-being of La Comunidad Latina. These gatherings are dynamic, energizing, and collaborative, offering simultaneous interpretation in both English and Spanish and open to anyone who wants to listen, learn, and share. The space fosters meaningful conversations and emotional connection.

  • Gun Violence Prevention

The Gun Violence Prevention initiative serves to develop a community-academic partnership that addresses firearm injury and deaths in the Latino community. We partner with families directly affected by firearm violence, youth, community and faith leaders, with academic researchers and practitioners to develop a roadmap for prevention and research in Durham, North Carolina, and the surrounding areas. Support for this initiative comes from Duke University School of Nursing Center for Nursing Research with additional key partnerships with Iglesia la Semilla and families of children attending Durham Public Schools.

  • Bull City Strong

Bull City Strong (BCS) is an Office of Minority Health-funded initiative to improve health literacy in Durham, furthering an equitable community response to COVID-19. The initiative strives to bolster Community Health Workers in advocating for reforms in the healthcare delivery system, enhancing health communication and information dissemination, empowering decision-making, and facilitating access to healthcare services. Ms. Sharon Muñoz is the BCS Health Literacy Program Coordinator, providing bilingual and bicultural offerings for La Comunidad Latina.

  • Mobile Healthcare Unit

Our mobile unit initiative, funded by a 12-month mini-grant from the The American Heart Association and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, allowed LATIN-19 to to distribute mobile healthcare teams in five different communities, providing access to care with prevention education, high blood pressure and mental health resources.

  • Governor's Advisory Council

The Governor’s Advisory Board advises on issues related to the Hispanic Latino community in North Carolina in addition to supporting efforts toward the improvement of race and ethnic relations. The council provides annual reports on accomplishments, identifies barriers, and recommends short and long-term state-wide policy initiatives specific to the Hispanic/Latino community.
